Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress occurs when, due to low antioxidant levels, the body  is unable to prevent cellular damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage or “oxidize” cells throughout the body in a process called oxidation. Free radicals are caused by excess sugar, carbohydrates and alcohol, exposure to tobacco smoke and air pollutants, poor liver and gut detoxification, lack of sleep and more. Antioxidants provide protection from free radical damage. Over time, oxidative stress can leave our cells and tissues unable to function properly. Oxidative stress is linked to many chronic diseases and accelerated aging. This test provides a quantitative assessment of oxidative stress, which may indicate the need for additional antioxidants.
