Intestinal Permeability

In recent years, scientists have identified zonulin as a key biomarker for intestinal permeability. Hyperpermeability of the intestines, also known as “leaky gut” is condition that happens as a consequence of intestinal tight junction malfunction. These “tight junctions” are the gateway between your intestines and what is allowed to pass into the bloodstream.  Your tight junctions keep things out like toxins, microbes and undigested food particles. When these tight junctions are broken down zonulin is released into the bloodstream, as a result circulating zonulin is a clinically useful marker of intestinal permeability. Zonulin is the only measure of intestinal permeability known to be reversible, which makes it valuable in monitoring therapeutic interventions.  Leaky gut is associated with food sensitivities, inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s Disease, autoimmune diseases, thyroid problems, inflammatory skin issues and more.
